Atheists sometimes object that people believe in God simply because it gives them comfort and hope. In other words, faith is nothing but a psychological crutch to help people face the harsh realities of life. This argument was most prominently put forward by Sigmund Freud though Karl Marx proposed a similar idea as well when he said that “religion is the opium of the people.” The argument still comes up in debates and philosophical discussions between atheists and theists. Christian apologetics, however, provides a solid answer to the issue, based on both logic and evidence. Basically, even if Christianity does offer hope and comfort, and even if believers embrace the Christian faith because of that, it simply doesn’t follow logically that the belief itself is therefore wrong.
