Indian court asks bishops to explain discrimination of Dalit Catholics – UCA News

The top court in southern India’s Tamil Nadu state has asked Catholic bishops to respond to a petition that accused them of discriminating against socially poor Dalits. Madras High Court admitted the petition on June 25 and sent a notice to all 18 bishops of the state’s Latin-rite Catholic diocese and representatives of the national Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India and Latin-rite Conference of Catholic Bishops of India. Petitioner Gnanapragasam Mathew, who leads Tamil Nadu Dalit Christian Coalition, told UCA News on June 30 that Dalit Christians, formerly considered untouchables, continue to suffer discrimination in the Catholic Church.
