Managua (Agenzia Fides) – Cardinal Leopoldo José Brenes, Archbishop of Managua, urged the faithful to live a “Day of silence and prayer” on Saturday July 31, the date that commemorates the first anniversary of the act of sacrilege and desecration of the Image of the Blood of Christ, kept in the chapel of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Managua. From 8 am to 4 pm, the doors of the Cathedral will be open. In accordance with sanitary rules, some of the faithful will be able to participate in the celebration of the Eucharist, in the prayer of the Holy Rosary and in the Crown of Divine Mercy. Everyone else will be able to join in the prayer through Church media. “The whole day will be entrusted to the peace and reconciliation of Nicaraguans”, exhorted the Cardinal. In addition, the bells of the Cathedral will ring every hour and everyone will be invited to pray while reciting an Our Father, the same will be done in all the parishes and chapels of the Archdiocese of Managua. On Friday July 31, 2020, at 11 a.m., an unidentified person entered the chapel of the Cathedral of Managua, where the venerated image of the wooden Crucifix called “Blood of Christ” is kept, and the Blessed Sacrament for continuous Eucharistic adoration, and set it on fire. All Nicaraguans have been particularly devoted to this image for more than 300 years. “An act of sacrilege and desecration, for which we must remain in constant prayer, to ask that the forces of evil be defeated” commented the statement released by the Archdiocese of Managua after the attack (see Fides, 1/8/2020; 3/8/2020).
