The History of Father Christmas in English Folklore – YouTube

In this video, I explore with you the origin of the English folk tradition of Father Christmas, a bit like Santa Claus he has a rather different origin and function in the Christmas festivities. Starting out in the Middle Ages as Sir Christmas, he is the personification and spirit of Christmas, who brings the joy of Christmas to heart and home. He blends with the separate folk tradition of Yule. In the 17th century, Sir Christmas has to endure being banned by Puritan miseries, but at the Restoration, he is revived again and reinvented as ‘Father Christmas’ dressed in warm and comfortable clothes. Charles Dickens in a ‘Christmas Carol’ the figure of Father Christmas is reinvented again as the Ghost of Christmas Present with a characteristic green fur-trimmed robe, the bringer of food and plenty and so he continues until the 20th century when he merges with Santa Claus. If you like Christmas and Christmas traditions you will love this video.
