A teacher who refused to call a trans student “they” has been freed by Ireland’s High Court after being jailed for breaking a court order to stay away from the school.  

Enoch Burke spent 107 days in Mountjoy prison in Dublin. He was released, despite not having purged his contempt of court, because his imprisonment had made him a household name.

The evangelical Christian was jailed in September after ignoring his ban from Wilson’s Hospital School, Multyfarnham, County Westmeath.

The school had put him on paid suspension during a disciplinary process, after he confronted the principal at a school event in June.

He was furious after her telling teachers to call a transitioning pupil by their chosen name and use their preferred pronoun “they”…
