Following the Angelus, the Old Roman Unscripted team from both sides of the Atlantic discuss the past year 2022 and the news of Pope Benedict XVI’s repose… and how Tradition and the witness of the Saints can still guide orthodox Traditional Catholics through the chaos and crises of the 21C!

  1. Hello Your Excellency & Fr. Tom,
I’m not sure I have the right place to pose this question but hopefully you can help me with this…I’ve just listened to unscripted and Fr. Tom you really caught my attention when speaking of the proper care of sacred linens. I belong to an FSSP Chapel & have been doing Albs, surplices and Altar Linens a few times in the last few months but, though, treating them with great reverence I had no clue as to the need of hand washing several times before laundering in the machine & disposing of the water properly. My Pastor is in the process of creating an Apostolate with volunteer women of the parish & has assigned me to be the person in charge, we have not started yet. The Pastor has purchased very expensive equipment & we have been assigned a special room, I have been doing this on my own in my home. I’m wondering if you could kindly instruct me on the proper way of doing this. The first question I need to ask is it ok for female laity to do this? I would greatly appreciate any guidance in this matter. Thank you so much for any help and also, for the guidance you all give us in the Faith! May God bless you all abundantly! Cecilia Nico

    1. Greetings Cecilia,

To help you in your service of church linens there is a book published by angleus press that covers how to care for linens.

Though linens should be handled by religious or clergy, due to the times we are in it can be of benefit to have specially appointed persons to handle the linens.

The rule of thumb I use is all pending on amount of linens. Container should be metal or glass, non porous material. For a full set wash: corporal purifcator, lavabo towel. Soak linens for 30 minutes in cold water. Hand rinse into another container in cold water and soak again 10-15 minutes. Then hand rinse and they should be Olay to be machine washed with use of bleach. Use of a stain removal pen can be used after two soaks have been completed. The water from the soaks should be poured in the ground, preferred consecrated soil. Hope this helps you, if you have any more questions please feel free to ask. Pax et bonum.
