Suspended teacher Enoch Burke has sought to justify his repeated attendance at Wilson’s Hospital School in defiance of a court order.

Mr Burke faces the possibility of being returned to prison by the High Court after spending a second day at the Co Westmeath school since it reopened after the Christmas holidays.

But leaving the school this evening he told reporters his suspension and the subsequent granting of a court order restraining him from entering the school was “preposterous”.

“I came to school this morning to teach and I was standing in the corridor for the day. I have not done anything wrong. I am simply awaiting reinstatement in my classroom,” he told Virgin Media News.

Mr Burke, who is an evangelical Christian, was suspended last August after publicly clashing with school management when then principal Niamh McShane requested that teachers call a transgender child “they” instead of “he”.
