Pentecost Ember Friday: Missa “Repleátur os meum“
Station at the Church of the Twelve Holy Apostles The stational Mass was at one time placed at Sts. John and Paul, but in the earlier days was held where the Roman Missal now assigns it. The spirit in which the Church solemnizes her feasts is one of intense spiritual joy. The Introit today contains, as it were, the summary of a great ascetic treatise on Christian joy: “My lips shall rejoice when I shall sing to thee, alleluia, alleluia”; this is the inward consequence of this prayer of love. In the Postcommunion we pray that the sacred mysteries of the altar, which we have just celebrated in obedience to Our Lord’s command, may become a remedy which shall strengthen our weakness in the hard trials that beset us.
Knowledge is the gift which enables a person “to judge rightly concerning the truths of faith in accordance with their proper causes and the principles of revealed truth.” Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the human intellect makes correct judgments regarding earthly things and how they are related to eternal life and Christian perfection. As such, this gift is a special illumination, which enables the person to realize the emptiness of created things in themselves so that they do not become roadblocks to union with God. At the same time, it enables the person to see through created things to the God who created them. Therefore, instead of seeing created things as obstacles to union with God, the soul views them as instruments for union with God. As such, a person sees how to use created things rightly and even in a holy way. Moreover, the gift gives to the person a sense of faith, sensus fidei, meaning that the person has a divine instinct about whether or not something, like a devotion, is in accord with the faith even though he may never have had a formal theological education. This gift produces several effects which have great value for sanctification of the soul: introspection, enabling the person to see the state of his soul; detachment from material things; and repentance for the misuse of material things or when they have been allowed to become obstacles to God. St. Thomas taught that the Gift of Knowledge brings to perfection the virtue of faith, but is linked also to the perfection of prudence, justice, and temperance.

And behold men brought in a bed a man who had the palsy, and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before Him; and when they could not find by what way they might bring him in, because of the multitude, they went up upon the roof, and let him down through the tiles with his bed into the midst before Jesus. And when He saw their faith, He said, “Man, thy sins are forgiven thee: and the scribes and pharisees began to think, saying, Who is this who speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? And when Jesus knew their thoughts, answering, He saith to them, “What is it you think in your hearts? Which is easier to say? Thy sins are forgiven thee, or to say, Arise and walk? But that you may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins (to the crippled man) I say to thee, Arise, take up thy bed, and go into thy house.” And immediately rising up before them, he took up the bed on which he lay and he went away to his own house, glorifying God.
