Our neophytes closed the Octave of the Resurrection yesterday. They were before us in receiving the admirable mystery; their solemnity would finish earlier than ours. This, then, is the eighth clay for us who kept the Pasch on the Sunday, and did not anticipate it on the vigil. It reminds us of all the glory and joy of that Feast of Feasts, which united the whole of Christendom in one common feeling of triumph.

In these words the Holy Spirit warns us not to be deceived by the world, because the world weighs its goods in a false balance; we should weigh them in the true balance of Faith, which will show us what are the true goods. Oh, how wretched I have been, O Lord, in having, for so many years, gone after the vanities of the world, and left Thee, the Sovereign Good!

Carissimi; Today’s Mass: SS. Philip & James, Apostles

According to the legend, St Philip preached in different parts of Asia and Southern Russia and was crucified in Hierapolis. St James, the author of the Epistle, was a relative (‘brother’) of Our Lord and Bishop of Jerusalem. He was thrown down from the Temple in 62 or 63. Their relics are kept in the Church of the Apostles (SS. Apostoli) in Rome. This feast has been celebrated for over a Millennium on May 1st, the anniversary of the Dedication of this church.
