Saint Gall was born in Ireland soon after the middle of the sixth century, of pious, noble, and rich parents. He was raised in a monastery during his youth, under Saint Colomban and Saint Comgall, his Abbot. When Saint Columban left Ireland, Saint Gall accompanied him into England and afterward into France, where they arrived in 585.

The indulgence of the eyes, if not the cause of any other evil, will at least destroy recollection at prayer. The images and impressions caused by the objects seen before, or by the wandering of the eyes, during prayer, will occasion a thousand distractions, and banish all recollection from the soul.

The day has dawned at last when I am to leave my place of exile to go to share with Thee in that joy which I have so ardently desired.”
