Mental health has received greater emphasis this lockdown year — isolation, loss of jobs and businesses, the effect on churches and schools and the simple irrationality of the rules can be wearing. It has been so chaotic a year that it shouldn’t surprise us when meditation is promoted as a path to mental and physical health. Breathe, a “self-care” magazine, touts “34 ways to lift your mood,” “embrace mistakes” and “find your purpose.” A smartphone app called The Calm collaborated with HBO Max for a “World of Calm” series, featuring celebrity narrators. In January 2021, the Headspace app launched the first of its Netflix shows titled “Headspace Guide to Meditation.” And the CARE channel screened in hospitals juxtaposes nature scenes with soothing music on endless loop.
