All-too-many Catholics today would no doubt struggle to answer this question. Whatever the cause of this difficulty, the Church cannot remain idle while her children remain ignorant of essential truths of the Faith. These weeks during which the Sunday Gospels are drawn from Christ’s Bread of Life Discourse in John 6 provide an opportunity for deepening faith and growing in wisdom and knowledge about the “source and center” of the Christian life. Failure to believe in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist is the most well-publicized crisis of faith, because studies have consistently shown a decline in the percentage of Catholics who believe that the Eucharist is truly and substantially the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. But lack of faith in the sacrificial nature of the Mass is an intimately related crisis of paramount importance.
