The Foreign Secretary survived nearly two hours in front of the foreign affairs select committee being grilled on Afghanistan’s rapid fall to the Taliban – and whether his department had been adequately prepared for what has become one of the worst foreign policy disasters in recent memory.  Yet while he faced a barrage of questions about his holiday while Kabul fell, Mr Raab shifted the focus to intelligence received by the UK and allies, which he said had suggested Kabul would not fall this year, and was “clearly” wrong.  The Foreign Secretary also admitted he did not know how many British nationals or eligible Afghans remained in the country, and that it was “early days” in terms of engagement with the Taliban.
